Dieses Handbuch fur den Marineschiffbau entstand zu einer Zeit, in der der Holzschiffbau langsam vom Eisen- und Kompositbau abgelost wurde, beides aber noch im grossen Stil miteinander konkurrierte. Das Lehrbuch fur Schiffbauer und Ingenieure der Marine war daher ein Standartwerk sowohl fur den Holz- als auch fur den Eisenschiffbau, das alle Bereiche des theoretischen und praktischen Schiffbaus im 19. Jahrhundert abdeckte. Daruber hinaus werden Bemastung und Takelung, Bewaffnung und die Ausrustung sowie die Konservierung von Schiffen detailliert behandelt. Das Buch richtet sich in erster Linie an Marineschiffbauer, ist aber in weiten Teilen auch fur den Handelsschiffbau zu gebrauchen. Dies gilt speziell fur den Teil uber den theoretischen Schiffbau. Der Autor lehrte als Marineoberingenieur an der Kaiserlichen Marine-Akademie zu Kiel und schuf mit diesem Buch das Standartwerk im akademischen Unterricht. Bei dem Buch handelt es sich um einen sehr aufwandig gescannten, vollstandig neu gesetzten Text mit vielen originalen Zeichnungen und Tabellen, das sich an Liebhaber maritimer Geschichte und klassischem Schiffbau richtet.
